OpenAI plans invisible text watermarks for ChatGPT and Codex in the EU
OpenAI is making text watermarking optional for selected API models and plans an EU rollout for eligible ChatGPT and Codex output, while warning that detection is imperfect.
AI / NEWS BRIEF
OpenAI will test visual ads during image generation and add third-party conversion and brand-suitability tooling, deepening ChatGPT’s advertising business.
OpenAI says it will begin testing a new visual advertising format in the United States later in October with an initial group of advertisers. The format will appear during image generation, remain separate from the generated image and carry an advertising label. The company says advertising will not influence ChatGPT answers.
The announcement also adds conversion-data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, alongside attribution, reporting and measurement partners. OpenAI is developing brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. It says those controlled evaluations are intended to assess placement safeguards without giving the partners access to private user conversations.
This moves ChatGPT further from a subscription-only product toward an advertising platform with the measurement infrastructure marketers expect. The important questions are whether labels remain unmistakable, whether conversational context can be used without weakening privacy, and whether placement controls work in sensitive discussions. Performance examples in the announcement come from OpenAI’s partners and should be treated as partner-reported results, not independent proof of general campaign performance.
